American Airlines has Round-trip flights to the Exumas from Detroit and Chicago for $516 and up for travel in September!!
The Exumas has been a bucket list trip for me since I first heard about them, but the flights are always just out of reach or WAY out of reach. These American Airlines flights just dropped and are well below their historical average. The Detroit flight gets in late and has a long layover and both of these flights are for travel during hurricane season, but for the right traveler with some appetite for risk these flights might work. Trip insurance is your friend for this type of travel and even during a busy hurricane season the vast majority of days are clear and beautiful!
The Exumas are a group of more than 365 islands in the Bahamas and are well off the beaten path of most travelers. There is a day trip that plays over and over in my mind that takes place in the Exumas. It involves a boat rental, snorkeling gear, and many planned and unplanned stops to the islands that make up this island chain. I’ve outlined a couple of the more well-known attractions below, but I think the magic of the Exumas is the potential for spontaneity and adventure, which is sure to be had on this trip!

Swim with the pigs
One of the most famous attractions in the Exumas is Pig Beach, where you can swim with friendly pigs that live on the island.
Visit the Thunderball Grotto
The Thunderball Grotto is a stunning underwater cave system that was featured in the James Bond movie "Thunderball." Visitors can swim through the caves and marvel at the beautiful rock formations and colorful fish that inhabit the area.
